What is your name or nickname?
“Pixel Dan” from ThatNewToySmell.com

Why and when did you start collecting?
Well, probably since I was a child, really. I always had a large collection of toys as a kid, thanks to my wonderful mother. It started with He-Man, moved on to Ninja Turtles, then the Toy Biz X-Men stuff, and just kept going. Like most people, I went through a phase where I was “too old” for toys, and fell out of the game. But when the “Power of the Force” line of Star Wars figures hit in 1995, I was hooked. I started collecting Star Wars stuff pretty seriously. Then, I re-discovered He-Man, which brought back so many childhood memories. And the rest is history, I guess…since now I just collect everything! Ha!

What do you collect and why?
I have a few main focuses: Masters of the Universe and Star wars are my two biggest collection pieces. Unfortunately, due to space limitations, I have to alternate what I display. Right now, the Star Wars stuff is taking a backseat to He-Man. Hehe.
On top of that, I also collect a lot of other random things. I have a pretty large collection of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stuff, as well as toys based off of video games that I enjoy. Plus, I always enjoy the odd lines from the past such as Food Fighters, Computer Warriors, Sectaurs, Rock Lords, etc.

How many pieces are in your collection?
Oh my…do I really need to count? The answer is probably WAY TOO MANY! Hehe. I have totes upon totes filled with Star Wars figures. My He-Man collection takes up a few bookcases. Seriously, I have a lot of junk.

How and when did you begin displaying your collection?
Well, when I first started buying Star wars figures, I liked keeping them in the package, and began hanging them on the wall. It wasn’t long before I had wallpapered an entire wall in Star Wars toys! From there, I started opening things, and needed somewhere to put them. So I began buying bookshelves and wall shelves…anything to display my new stuff!

Where do you purchase most of your collection, online or at local stores?
I would say a good mixture of both. I buy a lot of current stuff, like Star Wars and the like, in the stores. But older stuff I have to resort to online, usually.

What is your favorite piece and why?
I’m going to name a few:
1) Autographed POTF2 Boba Fett figure. When I first got this figure back in ’96, I told myself that someday I would meet Jeremy Bulloch, and I would have him autograph this figure. In 2002, I attended Star Wars Celebration 2. I meet Jeremy that weekend, and had him autograph that very figure. It was a happy day for me, and that figure is still hanging on my wall proudly displayed!

2) MOTU Keldor SDCC Exclusive. I just LOVE this figure. Of all of my He-Man figures, I think Keldor has to be the coolest one I own. Add on to the fact that he was a hard one to acquire, since he was an SDCC exclusive, and you definitely have one of my favorite toy pieces.
Do you keep your stuff sealed or take them out of the package?
I used to be a die-hard MOC collector when it came to Star Wars. But these days, I open EVERYTHING. There are a few things from time to time that I decide to leave in the box for various reasons. But otherwise, I ripped it open, I play around with it, and I put it on my shelf for display!
What influences your collection?
Well, I have a wide variety of taste when it comes to collecting. Obviously, I have my set few things that I love, but I will always run across a long-forgotten toy line or discover something new at a toy show, and suddenly it’s like I have to track these items down for myself. Heh. So, I would say that nostalgia has a BIG influence on my collection.
Are there any pieces you own that were hard to find or rare?
SDCC Keldor and She-Ra are probably some of the hardest to get figures in my collection. At least, they were at the time. Then, there’s always the new Masters of the Universe Classics. I know a lot of people missed out on the earlier figures like He-Man and Skeletor. I have all of those, include King Grayskull. Other than that, I can’t really name much else. But I don’t really collect “what’s rare,” only what I like.

What type of reaction do you get from people when they see your collection?
It varies. The most common reaction is “You are such a nerd!” I can’t argue that statement, haha!

Have you insured your collection or thought about it?
I do have insurance that covers my collection, yes. But recently, I have thought about itemizing it and getting more detailed insurance, simply because I have invested so much money into it.
If you could add anything to your collection what would it be?
A complete Eternia playset from the Masters of the Universe toy line. I have longed for one for so many years.
Do you see yourself still collecting 5, 10, 20 years from now?
Yes, yes, and yes. I enjoy it far too much. It’s who I am. And I don’t believe in outgrowing what you love.
Do you have any recommendations to those who are new to collecting?
Don’t take this hobby too seriously! You’re collecting toys, for crying out loud! Have fun with it! Enjoy it! If you can’t find what you’re looking for, don’t have a cow. Just keep your options open, stay on the hunt. You’ll eventually find what you’re looking for.
